Episode 15: Welcome Back
Episode 15 is honestly pretty unremarkable. It’s very cute and makes fangirls go all gooey inside (especially since Lag is so moe around his hero <3,) but it’s the normal season one fare, except now Gauche is there. Most of the episode is devoted to Lag and Sylvette crying, with a side order of Gauche being adorable and way too nice. (So of course my first response is… that he’s evil XD. Only evil people are as nice as you are, Gauche.) Lag and Gauche share a heartwarming letter delivery scene/ montage that gives Lag the affirmation he needs, and then Gauche goes home to his sister.
Although Aria is at the party, we don’t get to see the emotionally charged Gauche-Aria scene I’d been hoping for (…although that might be because of something that happens at the end of the episode.) The siblings and Gauche spend a happy night together, but by morning, Gauche is gone… presumably with a surprise!not-dead Roda (which really wasn’t all that surprising). Two scenes at the end suggest that Gauche may in fact still be Noir, just with +5 acting like a fairy tale prince skills, thanks to the memories he’s received from Lag. By the end, both sides– the Bee Hive and Reverse– are suspicious of Gauche, and we don’t yet know whether we should trust big brother Gauche or be wary of evil anarchist Noir.
Overall: 3.5/5.0
This episode is cute, but would’ve been fairly meaningless without the last five minutes or so XD.
Episode 16: Roda, Wanders (urrr that comma bothers me.)
Aaaaand a wild Hunt-san (supersaiyan cult guy from season one) appears! His wife, Sarah, is working at a temp agency that hires people out as dingos– and surprise, that’s where we find Roda, being hit on by lascivious old men. We flash back to Roda’s escape and subsequent rescue from more perverts by Hunt’s tallness. (Apparently all the men in Yuusari think that girls who wear their underwear out in public and don’t bathe are hot. Roda, your outfit is cute, but it is still just very form-fitting pantaloons.) Hunt spills the beans about Gauche’s return to the city and catches Roda’s attention, causing her to go out and spy on Gauche… and making us watch the last episode over again from a different angle (but it’s still not as bad as that one episode of Kaminomi with the dragon and the cake… eurgh.)
Tycho Brahe’s words continue to haunt Aria as Sylvette bemoans Gauche’s disappearance, and she worries that it is too late for Gauche to ever return to who he once was. When a search of Yuusari turns up no Gauches, Lag and Sylvette cry their way back to the Bee Hive– but Niche, proactive as always, heads out to find Gauche and make Lag happy again. During her search she encounters Roda and interesting things finally start happening again! I love Niche’s new attack (turning her hair into a giant fist and punching things with it… XD). Roda finds herself outmatched, but she’s saved from being beaten by a little girl when Noir swoops in (looking a lot like Batman) and rescues her (looks like Aria’s not getting Gauche’s heart anytime soon, u__u). Niche gives Lag the bad news– Gauche is still Noir– and subsequently provides us a picture of what our heroes will be contending with for the next ten episodes XD.
Overall: 4.5/5.0
Much better than the last; I loved the fight scene, however short, and I love Noir in this one, even if it means we don’t get to have Gauche. It was nice seeing so many familiar faces, too– a lot of side characters returned for this one, and the HuntxSarah was a nice surprise. Beyond that, the episode’s outcome was expected (and why does this feel like Naruto’s search for Sasuke? Or every other protagonist’s attempts to convince his best friend/ role model/ second cousin to come back from the dark side? Because it’s exactly the same. Oh well.)
