Series Review – A-Channel

A-Channel (Aチャンネル)

A-channel is one of those series that plays everything absolutely safe. It’s a stereotypical slice-of-life/high school story premise has been done countless of times before, and not to mention, the characters are very typical to this particular genre of anime. As some would describe it, A-channel is about “girls being insufferably nice to each other”, with a continuing plot or major conflicts practically nonexistent. It’s a mindless, fun to watch series, yet at the same time has no real lasting impact or memorable moments. Then again, most slice of life/moe series tend to be like this.

A lot of people would compare this series to K-ON, Azumanga Daioh, and Lucky Star because, quite frankly, this series is pretty much the exact same type of show. The girls are all cutesy and goofy, which results in some funny gags, but for the most part this series is just directionless chatter with silly humor thrown in. Each character pretty much fits in the stereotypical stereotypes (such as the goofy airhead, the silent but serious one, the ditzy girl, and the rational girl).

Admittingly, production values for this series are rather high considering the type of series this is. The animation is pretty fluid and consistent throughout the series, and the music is slightly above average. It does give a boost to the overall impressions of this series, but considering how the animation is probably the strongest aspect to this series, I’d say it’s not a good sign.

In the end, this series is just your typical, comedy oriented slice of life series. There really isn’t anything worth noting about this series, except for that it’s a good way to relax and waste time. “Mindless entertainment” would be the perfect word to describe A-channel, and I could definitely throw this in the “forgettable” list. I may sound like I’m being a bit too harsh here, but when there is literally nothing unique or differentiating about this series, I don’t really have much else to say aside from “it was entertaining”. At least the characters were silly and fun to watch, though a lot of their jokes did get stale rather fast.

  1. A bit like Nichijou in that it tried to replicate the humor of Lucky Star. Or at least, that’s what I felt. These 4-koma mangas with four girls turning into anime cannot be a good trend as they all tend to be a bit derivative. Still, A-Channel is enjoyable, but not for people looking for more substance.

    • Well, A-channel was actually slightly hyped up initially because of the good production values and how it promised to be the “next K-ON”. And indeed, it was very similar to K-ON in terms of style, but there really isn’t much to really differentiate about this series in comparison to the others. Not a bad show, but nothing quite amazing either.
